SVARTISEN GLACIER

Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier, 370 km with 60 glacier tongues. The glacier is over 200 meters thick and has moved up and down in volume and length over the years.
It melted the most from 1930-1960 and started to increase again after that. In winter, the glacier increases by about one meter at the front of the glacier, and about 6-10 meters in thickness on the glacier plateau. During the summer period, the ice melts by about one meter on the glacier plateau, and the end of the glacier melts by about three meters. When more snow falls in winter than ice melts in summer, the glacier will grow.

Fykantrappa – Powerful, spectacular and steep

Hiking in historical surroundings and the most wonderful ride, both up and downhill. The Fykantrappa was built in 1919 by workers called «Rallare», kind of wandering and poor people living on a day-to-day basis. The staircase was needed to be able to build the hydropower station in Glomfjord. Today a wonderful experience in the footsteps of Rallaren. You can walk with a guide or on your own. The history of rallaren and the life they lived is visible in the mountain and its surroundings.

The staircase has 1132 steps and is made in wood and well maintained, winding up the mountainside. The distance is approx. 1.7 km from the parking and to the top of the mountain, climbing 300 altitude meters. Hence, this is a quite challenging trip, although most people with seeking adventure challenge can do it. We guarantee a memorable moment and a spectacular view! On the top, you will find the charming «Rallarbrakka», a small cabin with its mountain restaurant set in historic interiors where local food and variety of drinks are served.
